TNR CLASS SCHEDULE

Please come back to this page and scroll down for links to low-cost spay/neuter resources in our area, information about TNR, videos and other helpful information for people who are learning to trap and caregivers helping our community cats.

NOTE:   Everett Animal Welfare Group (EAWG) is an all-volunteer staff.  Because the organization only has one or two volunteers who teach TNR classes, sometimes the schedule is based around the number of people who express an interest in attending a class.  If you have questions or need assistance with registration, please contact the instructor at FreeTNRClass@gmail.com.

While EAWG provides TNR education as part of  our effort to help community cats, we are a resource, not a shelter.   We will not remove cats from your property, but we will provide you with the tools and support you need to effectively and humanely manage community cats you want to help.

What is TNR?  It is Trap, Neuter, Return, which means humanely trapping a feral or stray cat (also known as a community cat); having the cat spayed or neutered by a local veterinarian, and returning the cat to the area where they were trapped. Community cats gather where there is sufficient food—whether it be a rodent population or a caregiver providing food and water.

How can you tell if a cat is feral, stray, or someone’s pet? A pet or stray cat is one who lived with humans and strayed from home.  It will likely show social traits such as approaching closely for food, or coming onto the porch or up to the front door looking for food or attention. They may also walk slowly toward you with their tail up or be vocal or purr when you bring food to them.

Feral cats, on the other hand, are not very social with people. They may crouch or stay low to the ground when moving toward or away from you. They often hide in the bushes when you bring the food out and usually won’t look at you. They may scatter, hiss, or growl when you are near.  While these traits are associated with feral cats and kittens, sometimes feral cats will begin to trust the person who feeds them and begin to come a bit closer or show traits usually associated with a stray cat.

You may have seen several cats gathering behind local restaurants or a friendly neighbor’s home. Some of these feeding areas may even have makeshift 2-story wooden houses or raised feeding stations.

Everett Animal Welfare Group is an all volunteer organization that works to reduce the number of cats and kittens put down in Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Suwanee Counties in Florida through TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) of homeless, stray, and community (feral) cats.

Through no fault of their own, these cats and kittens became homeless...whether they strayed too far from home and got lost, or they were loved and left when a neighbor moved away.

A female kitten can get pregnant as young as four months old, making it possible for her to have five litters of kittens in one year!

It's easy to see why two cats turn into twenty cats very quickly if they were never spayed or neutered!

We offer free TNR classes in Pensacola, Florida. Visit our Class Schedule page to see when we are holding our next class!  Most of the volunteers who help us with TNR, foster, arrange spay/neuter, raise medical funds, hold adoption events, and teach TNR classes came to know us because they, too, were feeding stray and homeless cats in their own back yard. Through their own experiences and personal challenges, they share their knowledge and resources to help us, and they empower others in our community who are also caring for an abundance of homeless, stray, and feral cats in Pensacola and the surrounding areas.

You may know someone who is feeding or sheltering homeless cats or you may be seeing cats around your home or young kittens following a mother cat looking for food.

Well you've come to the right place to meet other people who are also trying to help! There is a wealth of information available for people who are trying to make a difference for our community cats and kittens.

The TNR classes we offer are well attended by other people just like you who may be feeding feral cats and want to help them but don't know where to start.

Volunteers will show you how a humane trap works, how to safely transport a feral cat, and ways to connect with other caring people, and more. You will learn what steps you can take now to begin helping the innocent cats and kittens in your area. You are not alone!

Do you already help feed and shelter community or stray cats in your area? Please help by registering your colony here so we will know the status of the kitties if someone asks us if the colony is already being helped.

Please see our TNR class schedule at the bottom of this page. Also, visit some of the links below to learn more about how to safely use a drop trap, how to use a trick stick, how to tell the age of a kitten, and more!

SPAY/NEUTER RESOURCES

Some spay/neuter programs fill up fast and it is not always possible to get a reservation on transport because of the overwhelming need for spay/neuter services in our area.  For that reason, the low-cost options below might be a better fit for some people.  Consider reaching out to other people you personally know in your area to see if someone else is interested in making a trip with multiple cats in carriers or traps and consider helping with gas or transport. Perhaps one person could drop the cats off for surgery and the other person can pick up the cats at the end of the day.

Please visit each organization's website or call to verify pricing information, COVID or health guidelines, and process policies for spay/neuter services, payment, or appointment BEFORE leaving for any appointment.
